(BEIJING, August 10) -- After the first subdivision went through qualification round competition in Women's Artistic Gymnastics on Sunday, China came out on top, with the highest-scoring athletes in every event.
They continued to hold onto their dominant status through the performances of teams in the second subdivision, even though one event, the All-Around, fell to the hands of the Americans.
Subdivision two was highlighted by the participation of gymnastics powerhouse the United States. It was Americans Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, with overall point totals of 62.725 and 62.375, respectively, who took first and second places from China's Yang Yilin (62.350) and Jiang Yuyuan (60.625).
In the Floor Exercise, Johnson (15.425) and Liukin (15.350) also took over Jiang (15.050) and Yang (15.000) for the third and fourth places; however, China's Cheng Fei (15.750) and Romania's Sandra Izbasa (15.475) remain safe in the top two spots.
With athletes occupying the top spot in each apparatus after two subdivision competitions, the Chinese team stands firmly in first place among the six national and two mixed teams, having earned 248.275 points. Following China in team rankings are the United States (246.800), Romania (238.425), Japan (233.175), Germany (232.425) and Italy (231.275).
